Information about other items can be found on the Hākena catalogue, through the Library Catalogues link above.History / BiographyThe Union Steam Ship Company was formed in the early 1870s and grew out of the shipping business started by John Jones and later managed by James Mills. The company quickly became the biggest employer in Port Chalmers and remained an integral part of the economy of the small town. It grew to become both the largest shipping company in the southern hemisphere and the largest private employer in New Zealand. The company was sold to the international P&O Line in 1917, and the head office of the Company was moved to Wellington in 1922. Port Chalmers remained a branch office.
