The library was run by the Registrar until 1913, when Beatrice Howe was appointed as the first librarian. The library has grown along with the university and now includes, in addition to the central library, a science library, law library and health sciences library, along with medical libraries in Canterbury and Wellington. The Robertson Library, originally attached to the Dunedin College of Education and Otago Polytechnic, now serves as the education library for the university (continuing also its role as Otago Polytechnic library). The Hocken Collections, incorporating archives, pictorial collections and books, has been managed by the university library in trust for the people of New Zealand since it opened in 1910. The university library forms part of the university's academic division, but for the period 1995 to 2005 it was part of the information services division.
