He grew up in Christchurch, where he commenced his forty-year career on the railways. He worked as porter, shunter, guard, signalman and instructor. During World War II he served on the front lines as a signalman with the 17th Railway Operating Company. In 1960 he moved to Dunedin, where he became railway instructor for the region from Deborah, near Oamaru, to Invercargill. He became interested in railway history on joining the Railway and Locomotive Society in 1954, and devoted more time to historical research after his 1977 retirement. He published several books and was awarded the Queen's Service Medal for community service in 2000. Jim Dangerfield married Rene Violet Vincent and they had three children. He died in 2003.
