Treaures include, the only known photograph of the Māori leader and prophet, Hipa Te Maiharoa in the Waitaki Valley, a portrait of Mr Justice Greeson and his family in Christchurch, taken by A.C. Barker in 1865, and original Burton Brothers prints from their first West Coast series. There are a few cartes de visite of Māori and at the back of the album, a number of photographs taken by professional photographers in northern Europe. History / BiographyThis album belonged to Dr George Murray Webster of Balruddery Station near Ngāpara. Here Webster and his shepherd, James Little, crossed Romney and Merino sheep, leading to the breed that eventually became known as Corriedale.
George Murray Webster died in 1878 and his flocks were disbursed. With his wife, Susan, Webster had six children. The only one to marry was Rosa, the second wife of Ralph Anderson Chaffey.ProvenanceThis album belonged to Dr George Murray Webster and was previously on loan.
