Media & Sizewatercolour on paper: 840 x 655mm (sight)DescriptionHead of New Zealand's first art school when it opened in Dunedin in 1870, Scotsman David Con Hutton (1843-1910) set up his plaster casts from antique sculpture for pupils to draw in two large rooms in the former Stock Exchange Building. Students were offered courses in the British South Kensington system of National Art Training, with an emphasis on the principles of ornament,

Hutton’s own artistic style had a Pre-Raphaelite quality, which relied on many preparatory drawings. Working slowly in watercolour on a bright white ground back in his studio, he carefully recreated the colours and texture seen in nature. Here he emphasised the golden filigree of his son’s curls and the soft velvet of his tailored breeches and jacket, while capturing his sense of purpose in striding out with his whip.

David Edward Hutton would have been seven-years-old when this portrait was made. He went on to become the first New Zealand male to gain a full Art Masters’ Certificate from South Kensington, and then travelled to Britain to study architecture under Sir Banister Fletcher. From 1917 to 1931 he worked as an architect in Christchurch where he designed Opawa and Philipstown schools and Christchurch West District High School (now Hagley Community College).ProvenanceGiven by Miss K.S.
