Cridland A. & C.E.; l.c. in ink: Riccarton, November 1850; margin below image in ink: Homestead of the brothers William & John Deans who in Feb 1843 were the first to settle on the Port Cooper (afterwards Canterbury) Plains. They named Riccarton after their Scotch Home & to the river Putaringamotu, they gave the name of Avon after the Scotch River of that name. The original was drawn by Mr Cridland, a surveyor of the NZ Company & is here exactly copied by Mrs Hocken.
