HoyteDescriptionDescribed as ‘exquisite pastelline beauties’, the stepped silica formations of the Pink and White Terraces near Rotorua were the eight wonder of the natural world --and New Zealand’s most famous tourist attraction -- until they were buried by Mount Tarawera’s eruption on 10th June 1886. Images of them, before and after their destruction, were a lucrative source of income for many artists.

Arriving in Auckland in 1860, John Hoyte (1835-1912) taught art at the Church of England Grammar School and helped found the Auckland Society of Arts. Its 1873 exhibition has been described as Mr Hoyte’s own show with eighteen of his watercolours of lake scenery, based on drawings made round Lake Rotorua, Lake Rotomahana and Lake Tarawera, on display. Priced between £5 and £12, ten of them had sold by the third day of the exhibition. Topographically accurate, and painted in clear colours, Hoyte’s use of lapis blue to indicate shadows made his paintings particularly distinctive.

Dunedin’s reputation as a cultural centre drew him south in 1876, and Otago’s mountains, lakes and rivers were exemplary of, in his words, ‘the fruitful source of subjects which our Provincial scenery offers to the painter's brush’.
