Clark; label: McGregor’sDescriptionTo Nicholas Chevalier (1828--1902), born in Russia, the South Island seemed like ‘the Switzerland of the Southern Hemisphere’ when he arrived in Dunedin from Melbourne late November 1865. The Otago Provincial Government paid him a commission of £200 to paint Otago scenic attractions to ‘help attract settlers to the beautiful and fertile land’. The Canterbury Provincial Council followed suit, and he finished his New Zealand stay in June 1866 with a quick tour of the Mount Cook region, visiting Lakes Tekapo, Pukaki, Ohau, and travelling over the Lindis Pass to Wanaka and Hawea.

Rising to a height of 240 metres and named for its resemblance to a clothes iron, Mount Iron offered the artist a fine vantage point from which to paint the spectacular surroundings of valleys, peaks, rivers and lake. Although composed in the grand European manner, Chevalier’s view is a topographically accurate panorama.

Fidelity to nature in his work was appreciated by viewers of the 200 paintings which he toured to Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin before his departure for Melbourne in August 1867. Despite returning to Europe permanently in 1869, he continued to exhibit New Zealand subjects at the Otago Art Society until 1891, maintaining a loyal following amongst the buying and viewing public.ProvenancePurchased with the Hocken Library Endowment Fund, a $1,000 subsidy from the Arts Council of New Zealand, made through the Art Galleries & Museums Association of New Zealand, and donations from Dr H.D.
