InscriptionInscribed on the mount 'Sir William Martin. M.A, D.C.L. The first chief justice of New Zealand. Born 1807, died Nov 18th, 1880 at Torquay. T.M. Hocken'. There is also a note attached to the item written by Dr Hocken: 'Mr Martin, a man of unusual ability, was appointed Chief Justice of New Zealand in 1841 & was one of its most distinguished colonists. With his friends Bishop Selwyn, Hadfield & others he was a firm friend of the natives & wrote many valuable pamphlets on native questions. Much Māori literature was also from his & his wife's pen.
