Chapman in profile.History / BiographyBefore emigrating to New Zealand Henry Chapman was a banker in London and Amsterdam, a journalist in Canada, (where he co-founded the Montreal 'Daily Advertiser') and then was a lawyer in London, where he published the 'New Zealand Journal'. In 1840 he married Catherine Brewer and they arrived in Wellington in 1843 where Henry had been appointed a judge. In 1852 they left for Australia where he was involved in politics, law and journalism before moving to Dunedin in 1864 to be a judge once again. He served on the Otago Institute and on the Otago University Council and was Chancellor between 1876 and 1879. His first wife and three of his children were drowned in the Bay of Biscay in 1866 and he remarried, to Selina Carr, in 1868. (from 'Southern People', 1998)ProvenanceCollected by T.M.
