A surveyor by trade before becoming politician, Fox was an adventurous man, and these works were made on his various expeditions around the country. History / BiographyBorn in England in 1812, Sir William Fox trained as a lawyer before emigrating to New Zealand in 1842. Settling in Nelson with his wife he became a writer and then editor for the New Zealand Gazette, and then worked for the New Zealand Company as an agent in Nelson before becoming Principal agent of the New Zealand Company in 1848. In 1854 he became a politician before becoming Premier in 1861. He stayed in politics till 1881 when he became a member of the West Coast Commission working with Taranaki Māori on land claim disputes.
