DescriptionA poster to protest a visit to New Zealand by the U.S.S. Truxtun.History / BiographyCampaign Against Nuclear Warships, known as CANWAR, was originally set up as an interim committee of the New Zealand University Students' Association to oppose nuclear warship visits to Wellington in 1976. A public meeting was held in Wellington on 1st July 1976. The organisation became a coalition of concerned groups and by 1978 was named the Coalition Against Nuclear Warships (but still known as CANWAR).
The New Zealand government officially banned the entry of nuclear-armed and nuclear-powered ships in 1984. CANWAR organised a public rally at Parliament supporting the ban and to thank the government for its stance on 12th February 1985.
