Also included are ship registers he compiled, covering the period 1841-1950 and arranged chronologically by port. There is also a register of marine casualties, 1866-1950. Family papers in the collection include extracts from letters written by James Watt to his future wife Annie Johnston and a photograph of University of Otago graduates (including Jean Chisholm).

James Watt was a lawyer and the son of William Watt, a partner in Taylor and Watt, one of Whanganui's earliest shipping firms. Morris Watt studied medicine at the Otago Medical School, his training interrupted by service on the hospital ship Marama during World War I. From 1929 to 1958 he taught at the Otago Medical School, eventually becoming Senior Lecturer in Microbiology and later Assistant Dean. He became expert in a number of fields beyond his medical career, including entomology, heraldry, and New Zealand ships. Morris Watt married Jean Chisholm in 1933. He died in 1973.
