After leaving high school he worked in insurance offices in Dunedin and Invercargill. A keen outdoors man, he was an active tramper and Secretary of the Southland Tramping Club for several years. On his return to Dunedin he was active in welfare work and became a director of the St Vincent de Paul District Council. He was organist in several city churches and entertained on the piano for sing-alongs in rest homes and hospitals.
An independent amateur historian, Tod's published works include 'The History of Seacliff' (1971), 'The Making of a Madman - Lionel Terry' (1977), 'Kilmog and Environs' (1983), 'Whaling in Southern Waters' (1982), and 'Pubs Galore' (1984).
