DescriptionThis photograph was initially listed as unknown and subsequently identified by a descendant as being a portrait of Hariata Te Raurau (Wilkinson). Hariata was one of three Māori women with whom George Thomas Wilkinson had a relationship at the same time, during the 1880s. Hariata married George Wilkinson in 1905. This photograph may have been taken on her wedding day. Hariata owned several pieces of pounamu jewellery but chose to wear recently manufactured items. The greenstone heart in the photograph has survived and is in the possession of a granddaughter of Hariata's daughter Mereanawairingiringi (Ringi). The cloak, however, disintegrated during its life as a sofa cover during the depression years in the King Country.MediaPhotographic prints
