By: Phillippa Kidd21st Mar 2015 11:09PMI was unable to edit my comment above - it should say totara not larch. Also if this photo was taken in 1996 it is not the original bridge at Arthurs Point but either the second bridge (Edith Cavell Bridge) or the bridge upriver near Skippers.
By: Phillippa Kidd21st Mar 2015 10:56PMIf this photo is of the original bridge at Arthurs Point it was built by my husband's great grandfather. John Richard Kidd, a ship's carpenter from Airth in Scotland, originally went to Sydney in 1865. He later came to Bluff and worked on the construction of what was the first wharf there. He then went to Central Otago to build the first bridge over the Shotover. The bridge was built from birch and larch, pit sawn and axe hewn.
