5 May 1866 Newcastle on Tyne, England - 10 June 1886
Killed at the Te Wairoa Hotel during the volcanic eruption of Mt Tarawera.
"This is the most awful moment of my life. I cannot tell when i may be called upon to meet my god. I am thankful that i find his strength sufficient for me. We are under heavy falls of volcano."
This was written a few moments before his death.
The night of horror Thursday June 10th 1886, whilst showers of volcanic stones and mud were falling, gradually crushing the hotel, he suggested a religious service, he read about the penitent thief and prayed, he said;
"Oh lord be with us now; our lives are in thy hand, and should we meet thee at this time have mercy and forgive"
The party then emerged from the hotel when he was instantaneously killed by the verandah falling upon him.
